In most cases, no — there’s no legal or practical need to switch right now.

Spain does not currently offer a better national residence permit that beats what you already have under temporary protection:

• Full right to work (employment or autónomo)
• Simplified renewals
• No bureaucratic hurdles (yet)

Unless you qualify for a different status with better long-term benefits (like family reunification or a digital nomad visa), there’s no advantage to switching early just to “secure something.”

The EU has issued a formal recommendation to transition out of Temporary Protection in 2027. Each country will guide residents into new statuses.

The strategy includes:

• Encouraging voluntary return (for those interested)
• Offering national status pathways for those staying

✅ 1. Long-Term Residency (Residencia de Larga Duración)

If by March 2027 you will have:

• 5 years of legal, uninterrupted stay in Spain
• And absences totaling less than 10 months over 5 years, no more than 6 months consecutively

You may qualify for permanent residency (residencia de larga duración).

This is the most stable status in Spain, offering many rights and minimal renewals.

✅ 2. Modificación After 1 Year (4-Year Residence with Work Rights)

If 5 years haven’t passed, you can apply for modificación after 12 months of legal stay.

This change lets you access:

• A 4-year work & residence permit
• Based on an employment contract or autónomo registration

Spanish immigration law allows this transition under Article 191 of the updated regulation.

And once you reach 5 years total legal stay, you can still apply for long-term residency.

🧩 Other Pathways to Consider Now

Even during your temporary protection period, you can apply for:

• Digital Nomad Visa (if you work remotely or run a location-independent business)
• Startup or Investor Visas
• Family Reunification/Residence for EU/Spanish relatives (if you marry an EU citizen or have a Spanish child)

These options do not conflict with your protected status and are fully legal to pursue now.
